Things to Do in Moultonborough, NH: Your Local Guide
Explore Castle in the Clouds
Castle in the Clouds is Moultonborough's most famous stop. The Lucknow estate was built in 1913 and 1914 by Thomas Plant, high in the Ossipee Mountains, and today the property covers more than 5,000 acres of protected land with views over Lake Winnipesaukee.
- Hike to a waterfall: the trail to Fall of Song, a waterfall about 50 feet tall, is a favorite for families.
- Climb for the view: Bald Knob is a great hike for wide lake views, and Mount Shaw, at 2,975 feet, is the highest peak in the Ossipee range.
- In winter: the mansion is closed, but the trails stay open from dawn to dusk, with some groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Use the hiker parking at the top of Ossipee Park Road.
- In season: tour the mansion and grounds. Check the Castle in the Clouds website for dates and events before you go.
Meet the loons at the Loon Center
The Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary protect 200 acres of forest and more than 5,000 feet of Lake Winnipesaukee shoreline. Walk the Loon Nest Trail, about 1.5 miles, for quiet shoreline views, or take the short Forest Walk with kids. If you're lucky, you may spot one of the resident loons.
Hike Red Hill and climb the fire tower
Red Hill is one of the best short hikes in the Lakes Region. The Red Hill Trail is about 1.7 miles to the summit, where a fire tower looks out over Squam Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee and the mountains beyond. It can be windy at the top, so bring a layer. In fall, the foliage views are hard to beat.
Visit Squam Lake
Squam Lake is the second-largest lake entirely in New Hampshire, and it's just a short drive from Moultonborough. It's calmer and quieter than Winnipesaukee, and it's famous as the lake where the 1981 film On Golden Pond was shot. Spend the day paddling, take a scenic drive or just enjoy the view.
Stop at the Old Country Store
The Old Country Store and Museum traces its roots back to 1781, when the building started as a tavern and trading post. Today it's a classic New England general store with penny candy, cheese, local maple syrup and pickles by the barrel. Don't miss the small museum upstairs with antiques and old tools.
Where to eat
- The New Woodshed: a rustic restaurant in a rebuilt barn, known for its steaks and its famous flower pot bread. A cozy pick for a special dinner.
- Nearby towns: Center Harbor and Meredith are a short drive away, with more restaurants, cafés and shops on the lake.
Hours change by season, so it's always a good idea to call ahead.
